Minor magic from young tribesmen

image preview

It might have been the undercard, but the minor final was entertaining and as brilliant for Galway as the latest crop of minors came up trumps against the odds, with a brilliant fearless display of hurling in Croke Park. It couldn’t have started worse for them with Brian Turnbull finishing the ball to the back of the net inside the opening 15 seconds of the game and the same man slotting over a pointed free two minutes later to leave Galway four points down and under serious pressure.

Quinn is going for gold this summer

image preview

Castlebar's Nicholas Quinn will join Fiona Doyle, Shane Ryan and diver Oliver Dingley in going forward for selection for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games having gone under the FINA (International Swimming Federation) Olympic A time in Eindhoven on Sunday last. Quinn swam an impressive 2:11.24 in the 200m breaststroke, almost half a second under the qualification time of 2:11.66. The Castlebar native who trains and studies at the University of Edinburgh progressed to Sunday’s final in 2:13.27, just off his personal best of 2:13.04, but a commanding performance in the final saw him smash that time to claim gold and a ticket to Rio.

Westport move closer to retaining title

Ballina Town remain hot on Westport United’s heels thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over high-flying Manulla on Saturday night. A first half Dwayne Helly goal was crucial for the north Mayo men in a hugely competitive affair. Westport Utd picked up another three points to maintain their position at the summit of the league thanks to a 3-1 win at home to a stubborn Charlestown Athletic side. David Hoban scored twice with Mikey O'Brien grabbing the third goal for Westport. The only black-spot was the straight red card issued to goalkeeper Gary Cunningham in the 90th minute. Tom Towey tucked home the penalty and it was only a token gesture in the end. That loss also saw Charlestown's relegation to the Premier A for next season sealed.
